David H. Souter
Supreme Court Associate Justice
A quirky justice with eccentric habits.
Age at Oath: 51
Senate Vote: 90-9
An enigma: "The unknown judge with unknown values."
Media nickname was the "Stealth Justice" for provoking no controversy.
Personal Life
David Hackett Souter was born September 17, 1939 in Melrose, Massachusetts. He was the only child of Joseph A. Souter and Helen Hackett. During his early childhood, David grew up in Massachusetts but spent summers at his maternal grandparent's farm in Weare, New Hampshire. When he was eleven, his grandparents passed away, and the family moved to the farm. Souter's father worked as a banker in the neaerby state capital, Concord, and passed away in 1976. His mother lives in a retirement community near the Souter farm.
David attended the local public school where his great intelligence was recognized by teachers. At high school graduation, classmates voted him "most sophisticated" and "most likely to succeed."
Unusual lifestyle.
Souter is an unmarried, lifelong bachelor. He maintains a simple lifestyle, bringing his own lunch of apples and yogurt to work each day, and living in an undecorated apartment. During summer breaks he returns to Weare to climb the local mountains and visit with his mother.
