Born April 20, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, to Ernest J. Stevens and Elizabeth Street. The youngest of four sons, he grew up in a wealthy family. His father was in insurance and the hotel business; the former Stevens Hotel became the Chicago Hilton.
Married Elizabeth Jane Sheeren 1942, divorced 1979; married Maryan Mulholland Simon in 1980.
