Secret Societies

A list of organizations, fraternities, and other groups.

Origins, agendas, and members.

Definition of Power Elite:

"A group of men, similar in interest and outlook, shaping events from invulnerable positions behind the scenes." C. Wright Mills, author of The Power Elite.

Secret Societies are generally social organizations with:

  • closed memberships,
  • that usually have some kind of rites of initiation,
  • requirements of loyalty,
  • and are often sworn to secrecy.

Another version are groups whose members are associated with other groups, offering hidden agendas to their open memberships.

College Fraternities

Berzelius (1848) Yale University

First founded as the Colony Club in 1848 at the Sheffield Scientific School, it became a senior society at Yale in 1933, in the tradition of Skull and Bones.

Book and Snake (1863) Yale University

First founded in 1863 (other sources say 1865) at the Sheffield Scientific School, it became a senior society at Yale in 1933, in the tradition of Skull and Bones. Known as a much more progressive and laid back society than others, members included some of the most socially active and popular students on campus and it was the first to accept women and minorities. Each year 16 new members are tapped, often chosen from leaders in different activities on campus and basic parts of Yale's academic, athletic, artistic and social scene. Some believe there to be a connection between Book & Snake (B&S) and Skull & Bones (S&B)

Some prominent members:
  • Bob Woodward, Washington Post
  • Porter J. Goss (1960) CIA Director
  • Les Aspin (1960) former Secretary of Defense

Elihu (1903) Yale University

Elihu was founded in 1903, the fourth oldest secret senior society at Yale, and is the only one whose building has windows. It is the most left-wing of the current societies, named for Elihu Yale the first benefactor of Yale University. In 1718, he was contacted by Cotton Mather, requesting money for a new building for a small institution of learning that had been founded as the Collegiate School of Connecticut in New Haven, in 1701. His donation of a carton of goods was sold for 560 pounds sterling, a substantial sum in the 1700's. Grateful officials named the building Yale, and eventually the entire institution took his name.

Some prominent members:
  • Joseph Lieberman, Senator
  • Paul Monette, author

Phi Beta Kappa (1776) College of William and Mary

Began as a secret society, but eliminated secrecy in 1831 and is now national.

Alfalfa Club

Founded in 1913, this exclusive Washington D.C. club for the rich and powerful has one sole purpose - an annual banquet each January to honor the birthday of General Robert E. Lee. There are approximately 200 members, and each is eligible to bring up to two guests to the $185-a-plate dinner. They always serve filet mignon and lobster. In 1917, a 12-page booklet called "The Origin, History and Object of the Alfalfa Club" was published by club member, H. Ralph Burton. The description by a rare book seller read, "The author proposes that the truth about the alfalfa club was written in a remote section of the Rosetta stone."

Press coverage is not allowed but Washington newspapers seem to always get a fairly detailed description of the annual event, complete with politically-incorrect humor and a stage for bigwigs to show off their profesionally-written jokes. For fun, the club nominates a presidential candidate every year - not just during election years. The candidate must deliver an acceptance speech.

Bilderberg Group

The Bilderberg Group (not an official name) consists of a group of influential people who meet annually and yet whose existence and activities are private. Members meet annually at five-star resorts, normally in Europe, and has an office in Leiden, South Holland. The title of the group comes from what is generally recognized to be the location of its first official meeting in 1954 - the Bilderberg Hotel in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The founding members were Denis Healey, Joseph Retinger, David Rockefeller and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.

With members considered to be the "elite of the elite" some believe they have dictated national policies, rigged or stolen national elections, caused wars, recessions and murder or ousters of national leaders. Each year a "steering committee" devises an invitation list of up to 100 names to the informal meetings. The location of the annual meeting, the agenda and list of participants are openly available but meeting topics are kept secret. The official stance of the group is that their secrecy prevents the individuals' discussions from being manipulated by the media.

The group's secrecy has led some to believe they are a front for the Round table groups, or perhaps a semi-public front for the Illuminati or other secret societies. Attendees include defense experts, mass media press barons, government ministers, prime ministers, royalty, international financiers, central bankers, and political leaders from Europe and America.

Royal Institute of International Affairs (also known as Chatham House)

Chatham House aka Royal Institute of International Affairs is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization (NGO) based in London. Founded in 1920 as the "Institute of International Affairs" following a meeting at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. Their mission is to analyse and promote understanding of major international issues and current events. It is regarded as one of the world's leading organizations in this area. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is its American sister institute. Chatham House is its well-known headquarters in St. James's Square, previously home to three British prime ministers.

Chatham House conducts original research into a variety of regional and global issue, routinely used as a source of information for media seeking background or experts on matters involving major international issues. It is membership-based and anyone is welcome to join, although Chatham House has been said to reflect a "pro-establishment view of the world." They do receive donations from large corporations, governments and other organizations. Categories of membership include Major Corporate, Corporate, Academic Organizations, Individual and e-membership. E-membership is aimed at non London-based individuals not normally able to attend events at Chatham House. Annual individual membership is £245.40.

This organization is the origin of the "Chatham House Rule," a confidentiality agreement that allows seminar attendees to discuss the results of the seminar with the outside world, but not who attended or what they said. This is to facilitate frank and honest discussion on controversial or unpopular topics, by speakers who might not feel free to speak openly otherwise. Most meetings, though, are held 'on the record.'
